On show for the first time at ESPNIC and generating special interest were the non-invasive BP+ and the SpiroSonic products.

It was wonderful to see familiar faces coming by the booth to say hello and share their very positive USCOM 1A experiences. This wonderful feedback confirmed how the USCOM 1A non-invasive hemodynamic Doppler monitor is improving management of septic and critically ill patients.

Dr. Rujipat, from King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, presented on the advancement in hemodynamic monitoring and it’s significant recent progress to assist in the management of critically ill children. Invasive CO assessment in infants and children is often avoided because of the inherent risks. There has been growing scientific evidence with the development of non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The Ultrasound Doppler cardiac output monitoring (USCOM) is one of the most reliable tools for assessing hemodynamic physiology that can be easily and rapidly applied in a variety of children with hemodynamic alteration.

Her Policlinico Casilino team’s recent publication, ‘Preterm delivery and elevated maternal total vascular resistance: signs of suboptimal cardiovascular adaptation to pregnancy’, concluded that women with a diagnosis of Threatened Preterm Delivery (TPD) showing TVR values of >1000 dynes × s/cm5 and elevated levels of CRP are at high risk of preterm delivery. And that an impaired maternal cardiovascular adaptation during pregnancy in these patients might suggest a possible higher risk for subsequent future cardiovascular disease.

Advanced fluid optimization has been an increasing perioperative focus around the world. Initiatives to incorporate intraoperative fluid management (IOFM) and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have highlighted the need for an accurate means of monitoring fluid and medication administration.

The USCOM 1A was recently exhibited in Chicago at Anesthesiology 2016 – the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) annual meeting. This meeting is an anesthesia-related, education-based gathering of nearly 15,000 health care professionals held in October each year and highlights the latest in technology, medications and treatments.

USCOM truly is the fluid solution and perfectly suits the needs of attendees at ASA. Attendees who visited the Uscom booth were afforded an opportunity to discuss the benefits of USCOM’s flow-based technology and in less than one minute, could have their hemodynamics obtained quickly and accurately. Many had the opportunity to take the device in-hand, testing their colleagues and remarked at ease of use and speed of acquisition.

Congratulations to Dr Akash Deep, Director – Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, King’s College Hospital, London on holding a very successful World Sepsis Day meeting.
There are 200,000 estimated cases of sepsis and 60,000 estimated deaths from sepsis in the UK each year. 12,000 of sepsis deaths per year may be avoidable according to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt (NHS England)

There are concerns that sepsis is not being spotted or treated early enough due to common signs such as high fever, violent shivering, fainting, cold and pale hands, rapid breathing, confusion or delirium. Hypotension in children is a late and dangerous sign which indicates that the body’s organs, such as the lungs, brain and kidneys, have already begun to fail. Dr Deep’s passion is to bring non-invasive hemodynamic screening to children at risk, at the earliest stage, in the Paediatric Emergency Department. His aim is to improve early detection and outcomes by rational, individualised treatment, as he has established in the King’s College PICU.

The meeting was attended by MPs Helen Hayes and the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Sepsis- MP Cheryl Gillan along with paramedics and educational representatives from the Royal College of General Physicians, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. It was also attended by the mother of Sam Morrish, a child who unfortunately died from sepsis in 2010.

Uscom today notified the market that Uscom CEO, Professor Rob Phillips, met with the Chinese Minister for Health Mr Li Bin and the Jinan Health Bureau Chief Mr Jia Tanghong during a visit to the Shandong Provincial Hospital in Jinan, China.

The meeting was a demonstration to Chinese Government health leaders of the standard setting practices and advanced technologies adopted in the showcase Shandong Provincial Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The ICU is led by Professor Wang Chun-ting, a Chinese leader in Critical Care education and practice and an Uscom collaborator. Uscom CEO, Professor Rob Phillips, attended the meeting via the ICU’s live video-application from Sydney and discussed with the Health Minister Uscom’s long term relationships with China. The use of the USCOM 1A in the advanced ICU, and the potential applications of the new Uscom BP+ and SpiroSonic devices for management of hypertension, heart failure, asthma and COPD in the hospital and home care environments were discussed. Specific clinical initiatives around the use of Uscom devices in China were also discussed.

Shandong Province has a population of approximately 96.4m with more general and specialized hospitals than any other province in China, including nearly 80,000 healthcare institutions and nearly 2,000 hospitals. China has a population of 1.36B, with nearly 100,000 total health care institutions and 26,000 hospitals, and improving health care standards is a key political and social metric for the Chinese Government, and they are committed to growing the GDP proportion of health spend unlike many other Governments.

Professor Wang is an early adopter of new technology having implemented routine use of robots and innovative new products in his department. He bought his first USCOM 1A device in 2009 and has since adopted USCOM 1A as a standard of care and purchased a further 4 units. Professor Wang has also developed and implemented advanced video technology and telemedicine for education and ICU training, allowing connection of over 1000 regional Shandong ICU clinicians into his Department. Professor Phillips regularly visits Shandong, is a co-author with Professor Wang, and has been actively involved in delivery of education and clinical training in Shandong over the last 7 years. This has included a number of academic tele-presentations by Professor Phillips from his Uscom office at Circular Quay.

Executive Chairman of Uscom, Associate Professor Rob Phillips said “China is Uscom’s largest market, and this exposure of Uscom and its products directly to the Chinese Health Minister is recognition of our long term commitment to this market and another step in advancing our large scale adoption in China. Uscom recently executed an importation and wholesale agreement with the wholly State owned CIIC Shanghai, Science and Technology group for $65m of Uscom sales over 5 years. I believe a strong state owned partner is vital for success in China, connecting us to Government and Hospitals, and the CIIC partnership is planned to ensure continued excellent future growth as we bring the new BP+ and Spirosonic product series to the Chinese market.”

Uscom is the manufacturer of the USCOM 1A, the Uscom BP+, and Uscom SpiroSonic digital ultrasonic spirometry technologies and distributes and sells these devices worldwide. These premium digital devices are changing the way clinician diagnose and treat cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, including hypertension, heart failure, asthma, COPD and sleep disorders. The products are integral for optimising management of sepsis, guidance of fluid, inotropes and vasoactive therapies in critical care monitoring, for advanced monitoring of hypertensiona and pre-eclampsia, and in clinical and home care asthma and COPD monitoring.
